Why Montessori Still Matters in a World of Rising School Alternatives

As a Montessori alumna, a parent of three Montessori-educated children, and the Head of School at Mother Goose Playskool, I’ve spent over 30 years immersed in early childhood education. I’ve seen trends come and go—flashy new curriculums, tech-driven learning platforms, and alternative schooling models that promise innovation. Yet, through all this change, Montessori continues to stand tall. And not just because of tradition—but because it works.

In today’s world, parents are more informed than ever. They’re asking deeper questions about their children’s education: Why this method? What outcomes can I expect? Will my child thrive not just academically, but emotionally and socially? These are the right questions. And Montessori offers compelling answers.

The Shift Toward Independence and Curiosity

Modern parenting has evolved. We’re no longer satisfied with cookie-cutter education that prioritizes compliance over creativity. Instead, we value independence, curiosity, and emotional intelligence. Montessori has championed these values for over a century.

In the recent article from The Parenting Guide, Caroline Cooper—educator and parent—beautifully articulates the balance Montessori strikes between freedom and structure. Children are given the space to explore, but within a thoughtfully prepared environment that guides their growth. This isn’t chaos disguised as creativity. It’s intentional, respectful, and deeply effective.

Tech-Free, Hands-On, Child-Led Learning

In an age where screens dominate, Montessori offers a refreshing alternative: real-world, tactile learning. Children manipulate materials, solve problems, and engage with their environment in meaningful ways. This tech-free approach isn’t anti-innovation—it’s pro-development. It honors the way young minds learn best: through movement, interaction, and self-direction.

I’ve seen this firsthand—not only in my own Montessori journey but in the lives of my children, Kiara, Iñaki, and Simona. Each of them grew up in classrooms where they weren’t just taught—they were empowered. They learned to tie their shoes, pour their own water, resolve conflicts, and ask big questions. These aren’t just cute milestones. They’re the building blocks of lifelong confidence.

Montessori Alumni: Proof in the Outcomes

If you’re wondering whether Montessori “works,” consider the success stories of Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Jeff Bezos—all Montessori alumni. Their achievements aren’t just about intelligence; they reflect the kind of thinking Montessori fosters: innovative, self-motivated, and resilient.

But beyond the headlines, I’ve witnessed countless Montessori graduates go on to lead fulfilling lives—not just in boardrooms, but in communities, families, and creative pursuits. The joy of learning doesn’t fade when it’s nurtured early. It deepens.

Parents Today Want the “Why”

This is perhaps the most important point from The Parenting Guide. Today’s parents aren’t just choosing schools—they’re choosing philosophies. They want strong academics, yes. But they also want practical life skills, social confidence, and a lasting joy in learning. Montessori delivers all of these.

Our classrooms at Mother Goose Playskool are filled with children who are not only reading and counting but also caring for plants, preparing snacks, and helping each other. These moments may seem small, but they’re profound. They teach responsibility, empathy, and agency.

A Personal Journey That Comes Full Circle

When I reflect on my own Montessori beginnings, I see how they shaped my path—not just professionally, but personally. They taught me to observe before reacting, to trust the process, and to believe in the potential of every child. Passing this legacy on to my own children has been one of the greatest joys of my life.

Now, as Head of School, I have the privilege of guiding other families through this journey. And I can say with confidence: Montessori still matters. In fact, it may matter more now than ever.

Final Thoughts

In a world overflowing with educational choices, Montessori remains a smart, enduring option. It’s not a trend—it’s a time-tested approach that respects children, empowers parents, and builds communities.

If you’re exploring options for your child, I invite you to look closely at Montessori. Ask the “why.” Visit a classroom. Talk to alumni. You might just find that the answers you’re seeking have been here all along.
